This monocyte-macrophage-derived cytokine was first characterized by its in vivo antitumor properties and in vitro cytotoxicity to certain transformed cell lines. TNF-α also exerts a growth-enhancing effect on various cells and thus is a bifunctional growth regulator like e.g. IFN-α. As a mediator of inflammatory processes, TNF-α shares many similar biological activities with IL-1.
