Cleavage of APP by alpha- and gamma secretase (i.e. the non-amyloidogenic pathway) yields p3 peptide, a mix of Aβ 17-40 and Aβ 17-42. Aβ 17–42 contains the two hydrophobic patches (L17-A21 and A30–A42) and the turn region (E22-G29) that are crucial for determining aggregation and toxicity and form the strand-loop-strand conformation in fibrils.
