It acts as an aldehyde scavenger, a likely lipofuscin (age pigment) precursor and possible modulator of diabetic complications, atherosclerosis and Alzheimer’s disease. Janssen et al. showed that carnosine acts as a protective factor in diabetic nephropathy.
